About dog coat

There are two types of coats in dogs: undercoats and overcoats. The undercoat is a soft layer of hair that adheres to the skin, retaining heat and keeping the skin moist.

The second overcoat is thick, thick fur that protects the skin.

Breeds that have both an undercoat and an overcoat are called double coats. On the other hand, breeds that only have an overcoat are called single coats.

Do Italian Greyhounds shed a lot?

The amount of hair shedding will depend on whether the dog has a double or single coat and short or long hair.

In general, double-coated dog breeds shed more. The undercoat increases in the cold winter and decreases in the hot summer. It adjusts its body temperature by increasing or decreasing it depending on the season. Still, especially in the spring, the amount of hair shedding tends to increase because the hair stored for the winter falls out.

On the other hand, the single coat does not have an undercoat, so it sheds less hair. However, you must be careful about short-haired breeds even with a single coat.

Dog hair, like humans, repeats hair growth and loss in a certain cycle. During the growth phase, the hair grows more and more, and when it enters the regression phase, it stops growing and stops growing. Then, during the resting phase, new hairs begin to grow, and the old hairs fall out. Long-haired breeds have a long growth period, so they continue to grow without shedding, but short-haired breeds have a faster cycle and regrow quickly. As a result, short-haired breeds shed more.

The Italian Greyhound has a single coat, but since it is a short-haired breed, many owners seem to have a hard time with the short, prickly hair falling out scattered all over the house.

What is an effective remedy for hair loss?

It is difficult to remove Italian Greyhound hair if it gets stuck in furniture or clothes, so changing the sofa cover to a slippery cloth or changing the carpet to a short pile will prevent the hair from sticking...

As for clothes, if you hang them on hangers and cover them with clothes covers, you can prevent hair from sticking to them to some extent. One method for doing this is to wear clothes that are not noticeable even if you have a little hair on them.

Daily care, such as brushing and shampooing, is essential to keep the skin clean. It also works as a hair loss countermeasure because it lessens how much hair falls out of your dog's body.

Brushing

Brushing short-haired breeds are relatively easy, and you don't need to spend as much time with several types of brushes as you do with long-haired breeds.

If you have an Italian Greyhound, brush them once or twice a week when they return from a walk. Use a rubber brush or a bristle brush. Rubber brushes are made of soft rubber or silicon so that even short-haired dogs do not damage their skin. It has effects such as promoting blood circulation, but it is also difficult to adjust the force, so for beginners, we recommend using an animal hair brush made from animal hair such as boar. The bristles are soft and can be brushed without straining your dog. It makes the hair glossy, but the disadvantage is that it takes time because the amount of hair that can be removed is not so large.

Shampoo

Italian Greyhounds should be shampooed once a month. Excessive shampooing can cause skin problems.

As a point to note when shampooing, dogs' skin is more sensitive than humans, so "always use dog shampoo," "set the water temperature to a slightly lukewarm temperature that humans feel just right," and "when washing, Gently massage with the pads of your fingers."

Italian Greyhounds have very short hair, so you can dry them quickly with a towel, but in winter, it is a good idea to dry them with a hair dryer so they do not lose their body temperature.

The shampoo is once a month, but if you are concerned about dirt, you can wipe it gently with a cloth that has been wetted with water and wrung out.

Summary

The Italian Greyhound's hair is short, so you don't need to go to the salon for a haircut. But, on the other hand, although it is a single coat that is said to shed relatively little hair, it is a short-haired breed, so the cycle of hair growth is fast, and there is a little hair loss.

Since it is a dog breed bred indoors, it is essential to take measures against hair loss in the house. It's difficult to eliminate hair loss, so don't be too nervous and try to get along with it.
